WESTERN “INTERFERENCE” IN PROMULGATION OF DRAFT CONSTITUTION

On Thursday, the National Executive Committee of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), issued a Press Release condemning what it called “the interference of Western Powers” on the National Assembly’s decision on the draft constitution.

The Western powers, specifically the EU, United States, Britain, and Germany, had on Monday, urged Parliamentarians to vote in favour of the Draft bill.

24 hours later, the national assembly rejected the draft constitution, automatically killing its promulgation process. The APRC argued that The Gambia is an independent and sovereign state and does not deserve the dictates of the West. The green party also stated their concern about what it called “the hidden clauses” in the Draft Constitution.

The Press release alleged that the Draft Constitution shifted the powers of the Legislature and Executive to the Judiciary.
