Gambian borne Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court faces more pressure as the U.S. have imposed sanctions on her together with other officials of the ICC.
The US riffs with Fatou Bensouda steamed from the ICC investigation into alleged involvement of the US military troops in war crimes in Afghanistan.
The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described the court’s investigation which began earlier this month as “illegitimate” since the U.S. is not a signatory to the Rome Statute which established the ICC.
In June 2020, the Trump administration issued an executive order blocking all assets of ICC employees and banning them from entering the US.
Despite the sanctions, the ICC reassures its firm stance in prosecuting international war crimes and crimes against humanity.
