EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Upper River Region governor has blamed the over saturation of the Basse market for the obstruction of fire fighters to have quick access into the market to put off the raging that led to a colossal damage of properties on Monday.
Fanta B.S Manneh said the cause of the fire could not be still confirmed but blamed that people not been corporative as authorities have been advising them to provide space for passage during emergencies.
The Monday fire incident had virtually consumed the entire market, which several eye witnesses described as one of the most destructive fire outbreaks in Gambia’s farthest region’s administrative town.
Governor Manneh appealed to people, particularly the canteen owners in the market to always heed to safety advices and precautions to avoid such destructions.
Chief executive officer of Basse Area Council, Ousman Touray said the incident is distressful as the fire had eaten up the entire market. He lamented the huge economic loos the inferno caused to shop owners and the entire Gambia
Mr Touray called on their goodwill partners to come and support the victims, saying the Area council is currently working with the National Disaster Management Agency and the Red Cross in conducting rapid assessment to who were affected and the extent of damage.
Hudul Colley, National Disaster Management Agency coordinator in Basse described the incident as devastating and advised for people to stay away from the fires in order to avoid loss of lives.
The fierce fire consumed the entire market in just over five hours with fire fighters encountering difficulties to reach the center of the outbreak. Its cause is yet to be established but many people have suspected that I was cause by electrical spark.
