EYEAFRICA TV: New York, USA: Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem accused Turkey and the United States of supporting terrorism and resorting to economic terrorism on Saturday, during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
“Some actually invest in terrorism, using it as a tool to impose their insidious agendas on the people and governments that reject their external dictates and insist on making their own decisions,” he said, adding that “the Turkish regime is now rushing, with the support of some western countries, to protect al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups there, just as they have done before.”
Muallem also accused the United States of imposing economic sanctions and threatening companies from operating in Syria, later adding, “Failing to achieve their goals through armed terrorism, these countries have resorted to economic terrorism, an equally brutal form of terrorism, imposing a blockade and unilateral coercive economic measures.”
The Syrian Foreign Minister went on to say the US and Turkey maintained an illegal military presence in the country, adding, “Any foreign forces operating in our territories without our authorisation are occupying forces and must withdraw immediately. Should they refuse, we have the right to take any and all countermeasures authorised under international law.”
Leaders from the UN’s 193 member states have gathered at the UN’s headquarters to discuss international issues relating to development, peace and security, international law, among others. The General Assembly will take place from September 24 to 30.
