EYEAFRICA TV: Hong Kong, China: Experts and politicians from different countries slammed the United States for signing the Hong Kong-related act into law, describing it as attempts to take the Hong Kong issue to curb China’s development.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 into law despite repeated warnings by China, who says the move is a severe interference in its internal affairs under the guise of “human rights” and “democracy.”
Maxime Vivas, a French writer, said Trump wants to take advantage of the Hong Kong issue, to make a fuss about it. In addition to blatantly meddling with China’s internal affairs, the U.S. has also secretly patronized the rioters, according to Vivas.
“I have checked who was the patron of the Hong Kong rioters and it turned out to be the U.S. National Endowment for Democracy. This organization is actually a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency offshoot in disguise. This is obvious interference in China’s internal affairs. The fact should be reaffirmed that Hong Kong is part of China. And we see protesters arming themselves, wearing masks, which is unbelievable,” he said.
Michael Borchmann, former director general of the International Affairs Department in Hesse State, Germany, voiced his full support to China’s Foreign Ministry, saying the Hong Kong issue is China’s internal affair, and that the United States has no right to meddle in it.
“The actual law on the interior Chinese matters that is, in my opinion, a very reckless and arrogant act of the United States. As the speaker of your foreign secretary said, and this was absolutely correct, it is an interior matter of China and no other country should involve in this. This is a basic principle of international law and this should be regarded all over the world. The laws concerning Hong Kong are not an American question at all and they have no right at all to interfere in these matters, he said.
He also pointed out that the United States is anxious about China’s development so it seizes every chance to attack China to curb its development.
“Actually, they start attacking China on a lot of fields because they might be anxious that the dynamic development of China could make China more and more up again. The U.S. is a power which likes to interfere in a lot of countries. Russia is some kind of neighbor of Germany. When they are making contracts, the U.S. is threatening, ‘if you make this contract, you will have disadvantages,'” said Borchmann.
Silvia Menegazzi, a professor of politics at Luiss University, said she thought that Hong Kong has established mutually beneficial cooperative relations with various trading partners around the world. The top priority of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government is to stop violence, end the chaos and resume stability as soon as possible, so as to eliminate the negative impact on Hong Kong’s economic development.
“It is clear that not interfering in the internal affairs of other countries is a basic principle in dealing with international relations. The most urgent task for the Hong Kong issue now is to take measures to stop the violence. The traffic and management of a city is so blocked like this. China doesn’t want to see this, neither does everyone in Europe,” she said.
