EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA: Reports reaching Eye Africa TV have revealed that the sand mine confrontation between a group of people; mainly youth of Faraba Banta in Kombo East and Julakay Engineering and Construction Company; who claim it was issued sand mining licence by government have turned sour this morning leading to the alleged killing of two men by the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) who were deployed there.
Our sources confirmed that Bakary Kujabi, alias Seffo and Ebrima Bah had died during the Monday incident while many others, including some PIU officers sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
The dispute started last month between young people of the village including VDC members and village elders over a sand mining site in the village that Julakay enterprise claimed it was issued a licence by the government to mind sand there which started in May last year.
The youth were demanding for explanation and insisted that the mining activity be ceased because it will cause more harm than good to the community. There exists a sand mining site in the community but that was not an industrial activity.
Six youth were earlier last month arrested by Police in connection dispute and detained at various Police Stations but were later released on bail.
Our source said the PIU officers couldn’t contain the angry youth in the community so the military were alerted to intervene.
