EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA: Gambia’s Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC) Managing director Monday appeared before the Commission of Inquiry that was established in July last year to probe into the financial activities of public bodies, enterprises and offices as regards to their dealings with the country’s former President, Yahya Jammeh
Testifying before the Commission, Tumbul Danso said his office received an invitation from the government to consider purchasing Mariatou beach hotel. He said that was at a time when the Corporation was highly liquidated and they were told by the World Bank that the Corporation’s investments were becoming too big for the local economy so there was naturally common sense to consider diverting in other sectors,
“That was why when the government asked us to buy the hotel we grabbed the idea and went in for the proposal. Our intention was to transform the hotel into a five star.
Mr. Danso stated that they had series of correspondence within the Ministries of Finance and Economic Affairs and Arts and Culture regarding the purchasing of the hotel.
He said by then the hotel was pretty rundown and it cannot be classified as five star hotel so it was bought for 45 million Dalasi which was considered a good buy at the time. “It was a complex project and we did not have any expert in the office so we had to hire a consultant.”
