EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA: Armed police have been deployed to suppress mounting tension by a mob of angry protesters against the alleged death of one Ousman Darboe in the hands the Gambia Police Force.
News of his death came after he had been released from police detention. It is alleged that he has been tortured while in custody.
Darbo who is said to be of Guinea origin has been working as electronic technician at a stall in the serekunda market for many years.
Protesters gather and burnt wheel tyres on highroads leading to the serekunda market and areas near the anticrime headquarters.
Police responded with firing of tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.
Although, no additional death is reported, dozen are injured and others rounded up by the security forces.
In the wake of this tension, military reinforcement was seen in advancement toward the protest areas.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police has issued a statement calling for calm.
