EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA: Cloudy moments appears to be rocking supporters of President Adama Barrow’s political agenda in regards to formation of a purported party in the name of Gambia Democratic Independent Party (GDDIP) that will identify him as standard bearer in the 2021 presidential election.
Veteran broadcaster, Sarjo Barrow aired a rejoinder on Star FM on Friday that a previous announcement of a new political party in the name of the president was misleading, few hours after the initial broadcast on the same radio.
The earlier announcement stated that “a meeting to discuss preparation to establish a mighty new party call GDDIP party that will name Adama Barrow as 2021” was to be hosted by Abubacarr Giteh, Constituency Chairman in Gunjur, Kombo South on Friday 4th October.
On the same day, the radio ran a correction stating that the name, GDDIP, with a logo circulating on Facebook that was associated with President Barrow was misleading.
“It is true that President Barrow Youth for National Development, and The Barrow Fans Club are working to setup a party which Barrow will serve as standard bearer for the 2021 presidential election but a name, and a symbol for the party is yet to be decided,” the rejoinder stated.
According to the corrigendum, President Adama Barrow’s party detail will hopefully be announced ‘around January to February’ 2020, about one month after the official end of his coalition transitional mandate of three years.
President Adama Barrow came to power through a coalition that defeated exiled former president Yahya Jammeh in December 2016 through a vigorous campaign for a three-year transitional mandate. As December marks the end of the period in reference, the presidency has renewed its plan to trash the social contract with the people [coalition MoU] to complete a five-year term as guaranteed by the country’s constitution despite counter calls from civil societies.
