EYEAFRICA TV: President Adama Barrow has appointed Gambia’s Consul General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and former Ambassador to the United States, Sheikh Omar Faye, as his defence minister in a mini cabinet re-shuffle he effected on Thursday.
The new changes also saw the relieving and redeployment of interior minister Ebrima M Mballow, police chief, Yankuba Sonko, secretary general Ebrima O Camara and his own permanent secretary Muhammed BS Jallow, to other responsibilities.
The Barrow administration first appointed Sheikh Omar Faye as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Gambian Embassy in Dubai before moving him as Consul General in Jeddah. This is Mr. Barrow’s first appointment of a defence minister. His predecessor and former President Yahya Jammeh has been the defence minister during his tenure and since his coming to power in 2016, Mr. Barrow has been the defence minister and commander-in-chief of the country’s army until the Thursday appointment.
Mr. Barrow effected a first major Cabinet reshuffle in July, last year when he relieved his first vice president and brain-child of the coalition that brought him to power, Fatoumatta Jallow-Tambajang and replaced her with his foreign affairs minister Ousainou Darboe.
In the same reshuffle, Mr. Barrow relieved agriculture minister Omar Jallow, youth and sports minister Henry Gomez, health minister Safie Lowe-Ceesay, and information minister Demba Ali Jawo. He also appointed Ebrima Sillah, director general of the national broadcaster –GRTS- as Information minister; former President Yahya Jammeh’s finance minister Mambury Njie back to the same ministry as minister and Lamin N. Dibba as Minister of Agriculture.
State House announced on Thursday that the president’s latest reshuffle was an act under Sections 71 (3), 71 (4), 167, and 168 of the 1997 Gambian Constitution.
Interior minister and former West Coast Region Governor Ebrima M. Mballow was relieved of his duties and will now be re-deployed to the Foreign Service. He is replaced by Police chief Yankuba Sonko.
Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service Ebrima O. Camara is also relieved of his appointment and redeployed to the Foreign Service while Muhammed B.S. Jallow, who was the permanent secretary at the office of the president replaces Ebrima O. Camara as the Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service.
