EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA: A retired security officer since 1994, Jarju is said to have been arrested by Police while on a field work as a staff of the Brikama Area Council.
Sources close to the story said yesterday afternoon, a truck full of Police Intervention Unit -PIU- officers came to Jarju’s house searching for what they believe to be weapons kept by Ousman Jarju. Our source say after nearly an hour of searching, they could not find anything but went ahead and arrested Jarju.
Another source told us that he personally visited the station to see how best Jarju could be release but said he was told that one Landing Bojang, who is believed to be the Police Operation Commander in the West Coast Region has to be communicated to first. The source further added that they contacted Landing Bojang and he promised to investigate and get back to them, “but after we tried to call him back, we couldn’t get to him.” Said this source (Name withheld)
Gambia’s former President Yahya Jammeh’s step mother is said to be one time married to the father of Ousman Jarju but the marriage ended some 5 years ago.
Some said the wife one time had a problem with a UDP supporter that went up to a police level but the issue was taken out of police.
Since January, the home town of former President Jammeh has dominated headlines in this West African nation, the most recent one was last week when some residents of Kanilai reportedly conducted a demonstration, demanding for the ECOMIG forces, who are in the country on an ECOWAS mandate to vacate their community. This later spread into a serious fiasco, leading to shooting that led to many of the villagers sustaining injuries while Mr. Jatta died.
We are currently in contact with the Police at the headquarters in the capital, Banjul, to get an official version of the story. Eye Africa will keep you posted in the coming hours.
