Kairaba Shopping Center CEO, 5 other Businessmen Convicted for price hiking

EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Six businessmen including Chief executive officer of Kairaba Shopping Center have been convicted and fined by a lower court in Kanifing on Wednesday following their guilty plea to charge of hiking the prices of essential commodities in their shops.

Principal Magistrate Isatou Janneh-Njie placed a fine of D100,000 on the chief executive officer of Kairaba Shopping Center while the other five men were fined with D50,000 each or serve a 6-month imprisonment.

All the six men were charged for selling commodities beyond the stipulated price which contradict Section 2 (2) punishable under Section 7 (1) of the Essential Commodities Emergency Powers Regulations, 2020 (under Cap 17:04 Vol. 4 of the Laws of The Gambia 2009.)  The fines came after they all pleaded guilty to the offence as charged by the prosecution.

On March 24, President Adama Barrow frizzed the prices of several essential commodities including cooking oil, rice, egg and onion.

Chief executive officer of Kairaba Shopping Center, Ahmad Nehme was found inflating the price of a tray of eggs to D200 instead of the normal price of D150 and hand sanitizer to D250 instead of the normal price of D50 on 29th March 2020 at his business center.

Momodou Jallow was charged for willfully and unlawfully inflating the price of a bag of Onion to D500.00 instead the normal D475 on or about 28th March 2020 at Sanchaba Sulay Jobe in the Kanifing Municipality without authority.

Momodou Tunkara was charged willfully and unlawfully inflating the price of a tray of egg to D175 instead the normal D150 on or about 28th March 2020, at Bakoteh in the Kanifing Municipality without authority.

The fourth convict, Bubacarr Barry was charged for willfully and unlawfully inflating the prices of a gallon of cooking oil to D1,100 instead the normal D1,075, a bag of onion to D500 instead of the normal D475 and  a tray of egg to D175 instead the normal D150 on or 28th March 2020 at Bakoteh in the Kanifing Municipality without authority.

Fifth convict, Yaya Jallow was charged for willfully and unlawfully inflating the price of one gallon of 20 liters cooking oil to D1,100 instead the normal D1,075 on or about 28th March 2020 at Bakoteh in the Kanifing Municipality without authority.

The sixth convict Amadou Korka Jallow was charged for inflating the prices of one bag of onion to D500 instead the normal D475 and one 20 liters cooking oil to D1, 100 instead of the normal D1, 075 on or about 28th March 2020, at Bakoteh in the Kanifing Municipality without authority.
