EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) says its September nationwide tour is a one-time annual activity and has nothing to do with the country’s political situation.
In a post on its Facebook Page on Friday, the country’s Islamic Council said it [might have been] a coincidence that tour on “Peace” as this year’s theme when the country is found in argument on whether to or not protest over issues of presidential transitional term.
In September, sources alleged that President Adama Barrow was sending members of council together with the Banjul Muslim Elders on a nationwide tour to campaign against the 2016 coalition term of three years.
A programme guide showed that the religious leaders were to commence the tour from 6th to 10th October, where they will meet with Imams and other religious leaders in all the regions on the theme of their outreach.
It was alleged that they budgeted millions of dalasi for the four-day nationwide tour.
From its post on the social media, the Council said, it is not their thought that even the president will allow the lavished used of state funds in that manner.
The council clarified that it has not receive any money from government and that all its activities are self-sponsored.
“We call on the public to be aware that the Council has been carrying out its activities without any funding from the Government. The Gambia Government has never given a dalasi to the Council,” it said.
The country’s Islamic authority gave assurance that, it does not exist to side away from the laws of almighty God. “We assure the General Public that the Council is not here to mislead the Nation. All our activities are upon the authentic teachings of the Beloved Muhammad.”
