EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA: Gambia’s Information minister Demba A Jawo Wednesday confirmed to Eye Africa TV of government’s appointment of a spokesperson with his office’s receipt of a letter of notification of the appointment on dated June 14.
Last week, The Gambia Radio and Television Services -GRTS- reported that the president Adama Barrow has appointed Mr. Ebrima G. Sankareh as government spokesperson under the powers vested in him by the Gambian Constitution. The announcement of the new appointment was received with a public criticism with people asking what the responsibility of the information minister and director of press and public relations will be.
Eye Africa asked Minister Jawo whether his ministry was over occupied with work that led to the appointment of a new spokesperson which he said was not the case but he being a spokesperson of government is a sub-division under his ministry.
In a press conference with journalists Wednesday morning, director of press and public relations at State House Amie Bojang-Sisoho revealed that President Barrow has denied the broadcaster’s report of the appointment.
“President Barrow has the right to appoint anyone as spokesperson. I have been served with a letter notifying me that a new government spokesperson was appointed,” Minister Jawo said.
A GRTS insider told Eye Africa TV that the press release of the appointment was provided to the national broadcaster by a junior staff at the presidency. “If a spokesperson is appointed and my ministry is notified about it, then that mean my ministry is relieved of the spokesperson responsibility,” Jawo said.
