June 14 every year, countries around the world celebrate the World Blood Donor Day to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts.
According to the WHO, blood donations are needed all over the world to ensure individuals and communities have access to safe and quality blood in both normal and emergency situations.
The theme for this year is centred on “Safe blood saves lives” with the slogan “Give blood and make the world a healthier place”.
Dr Amadou Lamin Samateh, Minister of Health said in a statement that the day was meant to thank blood donors to encourage more people to start donating.
