Health Ministry Debunks ‘Misconceptions’ about Chinese Billionaire’s COVID-19 Protective Equipment Donation

EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Gambia’s health ministry has refuted what it calls misleading and unfounded information being shared in the social media, on the personal protective equipment and test kits donated to the country by the Chinese billionaire and owner of Ali Baba Group, Jack Ma.

The supply was a fraction of a 1.1 million testing kits, six million masks and 60,000 medical use protective suits and face shields commissioned by the Chinese billionaire for all the 54 the African countries.

Gambia received its share of the consignment on march 28, which consisted of 100,000 masks, 20,000 corona-virus test kits and 1,000 protective gear for onward delivery to various medical facilities.

This donation came under criticism from Gambians, mainly those in the diaspora who have been advising people not to use the equipment for fear of contracting coronavirus from them, considering that it came from china which is the source of the virus.

But the Ministry of health said the health of Gambians remain a priority to both the ministry and the Government.

Since the outbreak of coronavirus in December last year, in the Chinese city of Wuhan, Gambia registered four cases. The first is a female Gambian who entered the country from the United Kingdom and the second case is a Bangladeshi man who entered the country from Senegal. He was confirmed to have contracted the virus after his death while the third case is a male Gambian from France and the fourth case is also a male Gambian in his 50’s who also entered the country from France on the same flight with the first case-patient.

The health ministry said both WHO and WFP have certified the contents of the consignment prior to its shipment to the country, saying the two are institutions with capacities for logistics and health related affairs which make them leads in their own domains.

The Gambia Government and The Ministry of Health remains committed and will be vigilant in tackling issues of national concerns. The Public is therefore urged to remain vigilant and desist from such rumors.
