EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Gambia Action Party (GAP) will unveil their party flag-bearer for the 2021 Presidential election tomorrow Monday, at Qcity in Bijilo, the party’s administrative officer Muhammed Yaffa has confirmed to Eye Africa on Sunday.
It is the newest political party in The Gambia, registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) this July.
Many political commentators say the party leader and secretary general Musa Batchilly may not become the flag-bearer due to several legal battles that he has been involved in recently.
It has been rumored that the would-be flag-bearer had earlier donated 600, 000 dalasi to the party, apparently as enticement to get the post, but the party’s administrative officer Muhammed Yaffa denied the rumor, saying, “GAP is not a party for sale.”
In June 2017, opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) announced it has expelled the GAP leader Musa Batchilly from the party and barred him from taking part in all its activities, programs and functions. He was an executive member of the GDC party responsible for Foreign Affairs.
This June, a lower Court in Kanifing ordered Mr. Batchilly to pay three million CFA, approximately 255,000 dalasi as debt he owed to one Mariama Joof, a Dakar-based Gambian medical doctor, or risk going to jail.
In January, the court ruled that Mr Batchilly was ordered to pay the 255, 000 dalasi since September 2018 and defaulted. He told the court that he would pay the money in July, when he was sermon.
