Senegalese Ambassador to The Gambia, Bassirou Sène has also donated a sum of D30,000 to Senegalese community in Batokunku.

The Gambia Red Cross Society has earlier on Tuesday distributed blankets and hygiene products to the fled migrants.

“The Gambia Red Cross Society have distributed 160 blankets, 80 buckets, 48 bottles of Madar liquid soap, 40 bottles of 5 liters disinfectant to the displaced population,” the Red Cross said in a statement.

Sanyang grabbed national attention on Monday when angry mob stoked by the death of a native of the village, burnt down Sanyang police station, a fishmeal factory and stalls built on Sanyang beach.

The incident triggered tension between the youths of Sanyang and the security forces.

Police could be seen at the chaotic scene firing teargas at the violent protesters while the army briefly sent in troops to aid the police in controlling the situation.

According to the Gambia Red Cross Society, the riot left 23 people injured who were later rushed to Sanyang hospital for treatment.

The protest was in retaliation of the killing of one Gibril Ceesay by a Senegalese national who is said to have been working at the Sayang fishmeal plant. The victim is said to be 31 years old with a wife and 2 month-old child.

Senegalese Ambassador to The Gambia, Bassirou Sène on Monday faulted his fellow Senegalese for allegedly killing Gibril Ceesay.

“The reality is, the Senegalese is wrong on what he did. He broke into someone’s house. He entered a place he supposed not to; took something he shouldn’t take; and he was seen instead of running, he stood and killed one person and wounded another.”

The Gambia Police Force on Tuesday renewed its call for calm and restraint.

“The Police High Command assures the public that, thorough investigations will be conducted in the case of robbery with violence resulting to the death of Gibril Ceesay and justice will be served. The perpetrator is currently under Police custody helping with investigations.”

Various political parties, including UDP, have called for calm but warned that government must address the root causes of the problem.

Eye Africa TV can reliably confirm that some substances of suspected cocaine and cannabis were found at the Chinese fishmeal factory, which is been treated as a crime scene.
