EYEAFRICA TV: Tanji, THE GAMBIA:- The Gambia Immigration Department has confirmed the arrest of 37 people including women and children along the country’s coastal towns of Tanji and Gunjur.
28 migrants in Gunjur and 9 others in Tanji were arrested off Gambian’s coast, according to immigration officials.
The arrest comes following an intelligence the security apparatus received about the migrants who were on a perilous journey to Spain.
“On Wednesday the 9th of June 2021, the GID received intelligence from our counterparts that a migrant group consisting of various nationalities are planning to embark on a perilous journey using the high seas to the Canary Islands in Spain,” Chief Superintendent Mamanding S. Dibba, Spokesperson of the Gambia Immigration Department told reporters Friday.
“Our officers in collaboration with our sister forces, the SIS and the Gambian navy were able to work on this information leading to the arrest of nine people in Tanji and another 28 people in Gunjur, totaling to a sum of 37 people,” he said.
As part of the operation, a 40 host power out boat engine and 33 live Life jacket were used.
The migrants that are currently helping the immigration officers in their investigations, include 3 Sierra Leonean women and 6 Gambian minors.
Chief Supretendant Mamanding S. Dibba advised youths to take caution and engage themselves with more meaningful things.
