EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Gambia’s army chief, lieutenant General Masanneh Kinteh, Friday presided over the decoration of 18 officers of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) who are promoted to various ranks. The ceremony was held at the defence headquarters in Banjul.
The country’s President and commander-in-chief of the Armed forces, Adama Barrow elevated the junior and senior officers to the ranks of captain, major, and Lieutenant Colonel.
The decorated officers composed of ten lieutenants promoted to captain, six captains to major and two majors to Lieutenant Colonel.
Last year, more than six hundred junior and senior officers were promoted to various ranks.
Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Yankuba Drammeh saluted the promoted officers for what he called a well-deserved promotion, saying in recent years, promotion is considered based on merit unlike the past.
He said officers have to justify that they deserve to be promoted, which brought the introduction of promotional examination. “All of you have went through a process and prove beyond reasonable doubts that you deserve to be promoted in various ranks,” he told the officers.
Major General Drammeh reminded the officers of the six oaths that they took to serve their nation with diligence, trust and allegiance to the constitution and their commander-in-chief. He also reminded them that promotion in the military is not mere recognition but an additional responsibility and commitment.
Chief of defence staff Masanneh Kinteh said promotional ceremony is one of the most important moments in the life of a soldier.
He said promotions supposed to be normal occurrences in every growing and transforming organisation and in The Gambia Armed Forces, it must be in accordance with the available vacancies. “Promotions are not just routine exercises but a deliberate effort on the part of the leadership to ensure that officers to be promoted must go through a standard process with meritorious service.”
The army chief said promotion would be constant according to the needs of armed forces and in accordance with the government’s security sector reform agenda.
He urged the officers to redouble their efforts and to be more committed to serve their nation at all time. “I urged you to remain focus, resolute and be innovative. Let us not give up or be frustrated by things that are not right. We have to be part of solutions,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the promoted officers, Lt Colonel Abdoulie Manneh thanked the commander-in-chief of The Gambia Armed Forces and the armed forces leadership for recognizing their efforts and promoting them.
He reassured their commitment and dedication to serve the nation, GAF, and The Gambian people. He reminded his colleagues of the task that lies ahead, saying to whom much is given much is expected.
