Foreign affairs Cabinet Secretary appears before parliament over coronavirus

EYEAFRICA TV: Nairobi, Kenya: Kenyan members of Parliament are demanding the government immediately suspends all direct flights to and from China. This comes just a day after China southern airline resumed direct flights to Kenya.

Foreign affairs Cabinet Secretary(CS) Ambassador Raychelle Omamo was hard pressed to explain to the legislators the decision by government to be okay with the entry of a plane with 239 Chinese nationals and ask them to self-quarantine.

It is the arrival of the 239 Chinese Nationals in Kenya on Wednesday that has sparked queries from legislators on what prompted the decision by government to be okay with the resumption of operations by the China Southern Airline to Kenya.

Foreign affairs CS ambassador Raychalle Omamo appearing before the national assembly defense committee was taken to task on the government’s commitment to safeguard the lives of Kenyans against the deadly virus. The CS Omamo denied allegations that the government had failed to demonstrate its preparedness to deal with the coronavirus.

Omamo’s statement that the 239 Chinese nationals who arrived in the country on Wednesday had been ordered to self-quarantine appearing to irk the MPs. The chief administrative secretary for health says the government is assessing the situation and dismissed claims of lack of good will in fighting the disease, are pushing for Kenya to emulate countries like India and ban direct flights from China as a means of containing the spread of the deadly disease that has so far claimed at least 2,000 lives.
