Fans in LA mourn basketball legend Kobe Bryant

EYEAFRICA TV: Los Angeles, USA: Fans in Los Angeles are mourning the death of former NBA player Kobe Bryant who was killed in a helicopter crash in California, United States, on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Lakers legend and the five-time NBA champion, 41, and his second daughter, 13-year-old daughter Gianna, were among the nine people who died in the crash.

On Monday, many fans showed up at Staples Center, the home court to the Los Angeles Lakers, to light candles and pray for their hero.

“He came here as an 18-year-old, so really we knew him personally, you know he grew with me, and I grew with him. So there’s a lot of crying and a lot of emotion and just disbelief. A lot of people are heartbroken,” said Dante James, a fan of Bryant.

Another fan, Richard Caranza, said the death of Bryant is a loss to the community.

“He brought us championships, he took care of business when he was here with us with the Lakers, and once he retired, which at a young age, he still had a lot going on with the community,” said Caranza.

Fans around the world paid tribute to the NBA legend.

In China, where Bryant enjoyed a huge fan base, social media was packed with posts of shock and grief. “Kobe died” was trending with more than 1.7 billion reads and 1.4 million engagements on China’s Twitter-like Weibo.
