EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA:- The Government of The Gambia has published indicative prices of essential commodities in different locations across the country to curb skyrocketing price hikes.
The hike in the price of basic commodities nationwide has rattled suppliers and consumers, especially the low and middle income earners.
Consumers, traders and vendors have blamed one another for the sudden hike in prices.
“The purpose of publishing these prices is to increase public awareness on the prevailing prices to guide their market transaction,” Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment said in a statement.
Going forward, the ministry said it will be publishing the indicative prices of essential food commodities periodically.
“The Ministry wants to however emphasis that these prices must not be regarded as ceiling prices or price cap of these essential commodities,” it emphasized.
In an earlier press conference, the Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, Seedy K.M Keita, said the pandemic has scaled out the global production level and the international commodity prices have been surging from April 2020.
