EYEAFRICA TV: Whakatane, New Zealand: The volcanic eruption on White Island, New Zealand has caused 14 deaths as of Friday, the fifth day after the eruption.
A recovery team organized by New Zealand Defense Force landed on White Island early Friday morning and retrieved six bodies.
Two others remain missing and were presumed to be dead.
At a press conference on Thursday, Mike Clement, deputy police commissioner said there was a limited opportunity to locate and retrieve the two bodies, but promised no effort would be spared during the rescue.
“They will go onto the island and they will make every effort to recover all of the bodies from the island and return them to Wellington,” said Clement.
The White Island, a volcanic island, is a famous tourist attraction which people can explore by boat or by helicopter. If safety conditions permit, visitors can even enter the main volcano crater.
