China hopes UK to make objective, independent decision about Huawei: FM spokesman

EYEAFRICA TV: Beijing, China: China hopes that the United Kingdom (UK) can make fair, objective and independent decision that suits its own interests toward Huawei, said Geng Shuang, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, on Wednesday.

Geng made the remarks following the U.S. continuous pressure on the UK government to abandon the adoption of the 5G technology provided by Huawei as the United States claimed the Chinese company could pose security risks.

“Huawei has been operating in UK for several years and has invested billions of pounds in the UK, created tens of thousands of jobs, established a joint research center, and actively fulfilled its corporate social responsibility. We hope that the UK can adopt an objective and fair attitude, make an independent decision in line with its own interests, and provide a fair, open and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies. I think this will also help Chinese companies to maintain their confidence and expectations in the UK market,” said Geng.

Geng also said that the U.S., for a long time and in the absence of any evidence, has been generalizing the concept of national security, abusing the power of the country, and unjustifiably suppressing certain Chinese enterprises.

The U.S. government also interferes with the mutually beneficial cooperation of the 5G network construction of other countries and even threatens other countries and forces them to take the same stance with it, Geng said, adding such behavior is purely an economic hegemonic act.

“This act of economic hegemony is a blatant denial of the market economy principles that the U.S. has always advocated. It has seriously damaged the credibility and image of the U.S. and will also harm the interests of U.S. companies. We urge the U.S. to stop the wrong practice of generalizing national security, stop smearing and blaming China, and stop the unreasonable oppressing of the Chinese enterprises,” said Geng.
