EYEAFRICA TV: Beijing, China: Canada has acted as the cat’s paw for the United States and that will hurt itself at the end, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Friday.
The remarks came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a TV interview Thursday that the United States should not sign any final trade agreement with China so as to ensure that two Canadians detained in China can be released.
“One who acts as the cat’s paw for others will finally hurt himself. I would like to advise the Canadian side that forming cliques or linking other issues to pressure China is doomed to be futile and useless,” said Geng Shuang.
He also pointed out that Canada was responsible for the difficult situation of the relations between two sides and urged the Canadian side to release Huawei’s chief financial officer (CFO) Meng Wanzhou immediately and let her return home safe and sound.
“Those who tied the knots are responsible for untying it. We urge the Canadian side to take seriously China’s solemn position and concerns, correct its mistakes, immediately release Ms. Meng Wanzhou and let her return to China safely. Canada is totally responsible for the current difficult situation of China-Canada relations. As for the case of the two Canadian citizens that Canada has been badgering with, the two are involved in activities that endanger China’s national security. The Chinese authorities concerned have completed their investigation and transferred the case to the procuratorial organs for examination and prosecution in accordance with the law,” said Geng.
