EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Gambia’s cabinet has approved a 500 Million Dalasis Emergency Fund for Coronavirus Response during a state house meeting presided over by President Adama Barrow on Thursday.
Under the laws of the country, the president is given the prerogative to make such approval under any emergency situation. The fund will enable the Ministry of Health to provide effective, adequate, and timely response to the outbreak.
Since the outbreak of the infectious virus that is now classified as pandemic by the world health Organisation, only one case is confirmed in the Gambia on a female 21-year-old Gambian who arrived from the United Kingdom.
Health minister Dr. Ahmadou Samateh said the cabinet had taken a lot of time during the meeting to discuss situation of the virus in the country and extensively deliberated on what steps should be taken next.
On Thursday, the government issued a mandatory quarantine of anyone coming from 47 affected countries in Asia, Europe, and America for a period of 14 days just few hours after placing ban on flights from 13 destinations on Thursday.
Minister Samateh said all the passengers on board a flight that landed at the Banjul international airport on Thursday were all quarantined as announced by the president. He said drastic decisions will be taken against people who are taken the risk of going into the communities on the pretext of offering corona virus sensitization.
