EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: President Adama Barrow said his government will institute an inquiry into the cause of the Sunday evening fire outbreak at the Kanifing Industrial Area, to establish the cause and extent of damage.
Mr Barrow visited at scene Monday morning where he praised fire fighters and other rescue efforts for containing the fire at the right time, saying their next move will be to setup an inquiry team to establish the facts and the cause of the fire.
The Sunday outbreak sparked a wave of panic in the industrial area and the surrounding, following loud explosions from the scene. The cause of the explosion and the exploded materials could not yet be confirmed but more than five fire fighter stations, including that of the Banjul international Airport arrived at the scene to help curtail the fire.
Mr Barrow praised the fire fighters for containing the fire at the right time, saying their next move will be to setup an inquiry team to establish the facts and the cause of the fire.
“We will also look at other institutions doing the same business to see whether they are following the safety standards. These are important things that we have been ignoring and have cause lot of damages,” he said.
The incident covered more than 200 meter square and several people from Brikama, Lamin and Banjul said smoke from the explosion can be seen from more than 10 kilometers. Several workshops and cars were burnt to ashes in the fire.
President Barrow said it is after the inquiry that they can establish the extent of damage, advising that it is always important to maintain safety. “It is an accident and accidents can happen anywhere, whether an industry or not.”
He said as a government, it is their responsibility to come together to adjust on what they can do to keep every part of the country safe.
