EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: President Adama Barrow has ordered the immediate closure of all school in the Gambia as the country grapple with tension over the confirmation of more than twenty cases of COVID-19 in neighboring Senegal.
“All schools, including universities, Madrassas and Daras or majlis will be closed from Wednesday, 18th March 2020 for 21 days”, he said in a televised statement on Tuesday.
Earlier on the same day, the country was gripped in apprehension as the result of two foreign nationals who tested negative was awaited.
The president Said, so far, there is no reported case of any Coronavirus infection in The Gambia but the Government is not complacent.
Henceforth, he ordered the immediate suspension of “all other public gatherings in whatever form, including Lumos (open markets) and Gamos” for a period of three weeks which is subject to review.
“As another preventive measure, all travelers from hotspot countries will be isolated for fourteen (14) days upon arrival in The Gambia.”
To further strengthen our preparedness against Coronavirus and Covid-19, I have directed the Minister of Finance to provide funds immediately to prevent any infection.
