EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA:- The Gambia’s United Democratic Party (UDP), has on Thursday lost its legal battle against Sheriffo Sonko, Chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC), our sources confirmed.
Chairman Sonko was elected into office under the UDP ticket in April 2017.
However, in an interview with Kerr Fatou in June 2019, Sonko pledged his 100% loyalty to President Adama Barrow.
“Even you (Fatou) have to be loyal to the President. I have to be loyal to the President and to my people. And again, we cannot be at loggerheads. Even if someone is pushing me to that it I cannot do that,” he said.
UDP then expelled him from all the activities of the party for openly showing what they called his continuous allegiance to President Barrow.
The adamant Sonko refused to vacate his office, prompting UDP to subsequently filed a case against him.
The Supreme Court earlier today ruled that Sonko cannot lose his seat as the Chairman of Brikama Area Council. The ruling means he will continue serving his mandate until the 2022 Chairmanship election.
