BAC briefs NAMs, others on new digital tax management system

EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Brikama Area Council –BAC- Tuesday sensitised National Assembly Members, chiefs, security and members of the Technical Advisory Committee on its recently launched digital tax management system at the governor’s office in Brikama.

The new system was launched on January 7, at Kairaba Beach hotel. It is meant to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of revenue collection and its management.

The Council’s migration from analogue tax management system is expected to address its long term objective to ensure transparency and accountability in its governance.

Chief executive officer, Modou Jonga said the engagement is part of the Council’s education and information sharing campaign on the new digital system, saying the system will ensure viability of the Council’s revenue collection system.

Mr Jonga called on the participants to ensure reinforcing their civic duty of disseminating the information while calling for regular and timely payment of rate and tax to enable the council to provide the much needed development initiatives to them.

A Swiss-based 5C Energy company registered in The Gambia is contracted to develop the digital system. The company specializes in digital transformation solution, and will provide capability in maintaining the necessary services for the implementation of the digital tax management system.

West Coast Region deputy governor, Musa Suso said hopes that the new system to greatly address corruption within the Council in revenue collection and tax evasion, encouraging the council and 5C company to immediately seal the deal and forge ahead.

During the event, participants suggest to the Council to conduct a survey to identify all the potential revenue sources in the region and urged the council to focus on institutional cheque payment for now while individuals can pay in cash.
