Angolan President declares National State of Emergency

EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, declared from the 27th of March this year, a State of National Emergency to combat Covid-19. João Lourenço’s decision is the result of consultations with the Council of the Republic and the National Assembly that gave a favorable opinion to the State of Emergency.

Dear compatriots, Covid-19, is a highly contagious disease, declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization, WHO, for having a high mortality rate and for having a negative economic, social impact worldwide.

Our country, registered up to 23 March, 3 positive cases of the disease, all Angolans coming from abroad, thus being able to consider as autonomous cases, which can lead to the spread of the disease quickly.

Notwithstanding the fact that the positive numbers are still reduced, it is important that we learn from the mistakes of others, and it is recommended that a set of extraordinary and urgent measures be taken and with required anticipation

The success of the spread of the pandemic in Angola implies not only quick and adequate responses by health services, but also the feeling and sacrifice of all citizens, who are thus limited in their rights and in their social life and professional.

Considering that the emergency on the public road, which is characterized as a situation that demands urgent employment, exceptional measures, control, risk prevention and risk containment to public health, it is necessary to avoid spreading as quickly as possible of the pandemic, and the serious consequences associated with it, after consulting the Council of the Republic and after hearing the National Assembly of the Republic, under the terms and power attributed to me in the constitution of the Republic of Angola, I declare, State of Emergency, which comes into effective at midnight on March 27, 2020.
