EYEAFRICA TV, Banjul, The Gambia: Eye Africa TV can confirm from the police about a drowning incident at the Kololi beach around Senegambia area, involving seven young boys, all about age 15.
The boys were rescued by life savers and evacuated to the Serrekunda General Hospital where four of them were pronounced dead. They were said to have gone for swimming at the beach with newly circumcised children.
Three of the teenagers who lost their lives are said to be fifteen years of age and the third one is 14. The bodies are currently at the Serrekunda General Hospital mortuary.
Sources say parents of the children had demand for the dead bodies but police insisted that a proper handing must be done through an affidavit. We could not yet confirm the addresses of the teenagers.
Our report visited the Senegambia police intervention unit post but he was asked to contact the Police spokesperson, who confirmed the incident to us.
The fire and rescue service officers were contacted for nearly two hours into the incident but they couldn’t be reached. Beach boys and some local canoe owners conducted the rescue operation and recovered the bodies from the water. They were rushed to the Serrekunda hospital where they were pronounced dead.
In a facebook post during incident, Momodou Sabally, who was present at the scene wrote: after more than one hour ago, no sign of serious intervention by state agents…one or two individuals rendering desperate efforts as kids remain lost at sea…
