EYEAFRICA TV: Sochi, RUSSIA: Senegalese President Macky Sall, Chairperson of African Union in a close proximity meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin says Russia sanctions are exacerbating food security crisis in Africa.
Talks between the two leaders took place in the Russian city of Sochi on Friday.
Discussions to release cereal stocks and fertilizers whose blockage is posing severe threat to food security on the African continent dominated the meeting.
Mr. Sall also pointed to Putin that his country’s action in Ukraine has massively affected the world and even countries that are far away are feeling the effect.
He says the economic sanctions on Russia have exacerbated the situation because Russian cereals such as wheat and Fertilizers are inaccessible for Africa.
And lamented that such situation is leading to food insecurity in the African continent and sounded the need to work together for food and fertilizers to be removed from the sanction list.
The AU Chairperson had earlier requested European leaders at a meeting at Brussels to do anything possible to release grain stocks available in Ukraine.
He has also described the blockade of stocks of grains and its effect as a catastrophic scenario of shortages and generalized price increase.
The occurrence of such crisis in the aftermath of the pandemic which had worsened hunger in the continent may well mean that the worst is ahead he said.
Numerous African countries are dependent on imports from Russia therefore the impact of the war is being felt acutely in the continent.
The meeting that came off as the war in Ukraine continues to skyrocket fuel prices, grain and fertilizer around the globe took place at the invitation of President Putin.
