Gunjur Woman Defends Golden Lead Company in Waste Water Discharge allegation

EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA: A woman, apparently fishmonger at Gunjur fish landing site has defended Golden Lead Import and Export Company, a Chinese fishing company that wad last week dragged to the Brikama Magistrate’ by the National Environment Agency –NEA- on charges of discharging waste water from their fish processing plant into the Gunjur Sea.

“Whenever development comes, it comes with advantages and disadvantages” the woman was quoted as saying during an interview with Eye Africa TV.

The woman said contrary to what many people are complaining about the company’s presence in the coastal fishing community, she sees more development here than disadvantages. Say “the company is providing a source of employment and “In a day, you can go there and you will be offered a bucket of fish which can be sold at D300. Who else can give you that on a daily basis?”

According to her, those who are complaining that the company had emptied its waste water in the sea is baseless to her, saying she did not see any harm that it cause.
