Gambia’s Annual Stake of The Nation Held on Saturday

EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, THE GAMBIA: The second annual stake of National Forum was held on Saturday at the Coco Ocean Resort and Spa under the theme Improving Implementing, Delivery, and Impact.

Stake in the Nation Forum, an annual consultation event In the Diaspora Strategy and the Gambia National Development Plan, was first held on Saturday 13th January 2018 under the auspice of President Adama Barrow, who launched the  Gambia Diaspora strategy, the Gambia Diaspora Directorate and Ministerial report on Curbing Irregular Migration through sustainable Livelihood.

This year’s event was graced by the Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, cabinet Ministers, heads of agencies, Governors, Ambassadors, Civil society organizations, labor organizations,  Gambian diaspora and experts among a host of high dignitaries.

The Gambia Diaspora Directorate which is created with a mission to support, promote and facilitate consultative, productive and purposeful engagement, shall be the lead institution for implementing and monitoring and end review of Diaspora strategy.

Speaking at the ceremony the  Governor of the Central Bank of the Gambia Bakary Jammeh announced that the private remittances are very important to the sustainability of the Gambian, noting that in 2018 Diaspora remittances was at $271 million dollars which is an increase of 19%  compare to the previous 5years….

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Gambians Abroad Dr. Mamadou Tangara said migration is a global phenomenon that is here to stay and it has direct impact on any Nation development plan and the Gambia is not an exception. Noting migration is a wakeup call to nations in the millennium era with the Diaspora contributing immensely to the government development plan. He said President Barrow recognizes that the Diaspora is the eighth region of The Gambia.

In his keynote at the opening ceremony of the second stake in the nation forum, Vice President and Minister of women affairs Lawyer Ousainou Darboe said government is glad to be part of the second stake in nation forum which is adopted by the government as a platform for discussion of matters of national development with the Diaspora. This, he said the government since coming to power have always advocate for the national development plan. Pointing out that, those that fail to plan, plans to fail.

Stake in nation forum for circular and labor migration will work with partners using global migration processes, mobility partnership, temporary worker schemes and other bilateral arrangements with the government facilitating circular migration contracts for 350 skilled migrant workers in 2021 and set a framework for structured labor migration.
