China donates 5 vehicles to KMC to improve waste collection and security

EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: Chinese government through its Banjul Embassy have supported the Kanifing Municipal Council in improving its waste collection and security with the donation of five vehicles on Thursday.

The donation vehicles include two skip trucks for waste collection, two pickup trucks to strengthen security and one SUV car for administrative purpose. The gesture is meant to strengthen the Council’s capacity in emergency response and in providing quality services to its residents.

The Council’s director of services, Lamin Sanyang said the donation is in line with their policies and programmes. “The waste collection vehicles will go long towards helping the Council in it efforts to make the Municipality a clean place.”

Mr Sanyang said one of their major challenges is inadequate vehicles to collect waste within the Kanifing Municipality. “Therefore, the handing over of the vehicles is timely.”

He assured the donors of the Council’s full commitment and dedication to making sure the donated vehicles are well taken care of.

Ma Lamin Ceesay, police commissioner of the Council, also commented the embassy for providing is department with two pickups to strengthen security in the municipality.

He said in KMC, erecting of illegal structures and dumping areas are common offenses, saying his department is cognisant of the challenges within the municipality, and they will use vehicles to increasing their frequent patrol to areas where illegal dumping happens, especially during the night.

He also assured that his men will patrol the streets and vacate the vendors from nondesignated areas so as to prevent traffic jam within KM.

Chinese Ambassador Ma Jianchun said Kanifing Municipality is the economic centre of The Gambia which has been developing fast and peoples’ living standards have been improved.

“However, due to historic reasons and lack of resources, the city still has a long way to go towards meeting the peoples’ increasing demands for better municipal services.”

He said China has been a long-standing partner and a friend of The Gambia since the 80s. “Since the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and The Gambia, cooperation between local governments of our two countries has been once again gaining momentum.”

He said the eight major initiatives of the 2018 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing summit stated that China and African countries, including The Gambia, would keep encouraging more dialogues and cooperation at the local government.

“We have been providing training opportunities to KMC staff in the past consecutive years, and more recently, at the proposal of the Lord Mayor Bensouda, we have introduced Kanifing Municipality to some Chinese cities, in hope to find a suitable twinning city from China,” he stated.

Ambassador Jianchun said KM is a place full of passion, dynamism and hope. “Over the past years, the most prominent phenomena that I noticed is that the city has become much cleaner and more organised.”

The Chinese diplomat said he is hopeful that the vehicles could be fully used and contribute to the work of the KMC and the daily lives of the Kanifing people.

Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda said KMC is a young energetic council that is trying to give the best of services to its people.  “We know that we are a very poor country and we have a long way to go. Who can we best learn from than the Peoples’ Republic of China? Who best can we ask help from than the China?”

Mayor Bensouda said the vehicles will go a long towards developing and ensuring that the services in terms of cleanliness reaches every corner of the municipality.
